Chapter 14

“You waiting for her to get off work?” Ian asked, sipping his beer next to Rory on a neighboring barstool.

“What do you think?” Rory didn’t look at Liberty as she moved around Bo’s bar, ordering people to break down different things. He’d already offered to help—half a dozen times—but she’d practically shooed him away. Almost everyone had gone, including Bo and Nyx, but the shifters Liberty had hired for the weeklong parties were still here, as well as some of the club’s staff.

“How long are you gonna be pissed at me?” Ian grumbled.

“As long as it takes for me to get the image of you smelling my female out of my head.”

“Oh for fuck’s sake—”

“I’m not pissed.” Not really. It had just jarred him to see his brother touching Liberty. It had brought both his wolf and demon to the surface with a vengeance he hadn’t been able to control. He’d never reacted like that, never felt such a loss of control over himself. It probably should have alarmed him, but he knew what it was. He wanted to mate her and any male that got in his way, in the real sense or just perceived, was an enemy.

“So…we ever going to talk about the difference in her scent?”

Rory frowned, looked over his shoulder to see Liberty disappear through the kitchen door. He didn’t want to talk about it. “Come on, let’s start helping.” With her out of sight they could actually do some good around here. And the faster everything was cleaned up, the faster they got out of there so he could get her alone.

“I’ll take that as a no,” Ian muttered.

Good, because Rory wasn’t talking to anyone about the change until he talked to Liberty. She’d always had a sweet, enticing scent but something was definitely different about her. He hadn’t registered it until after he and Ian had gotten up from their fight. She now smelled like spring rain and cinnamon. It was something natural, coming directly from her, not a perfume.

Considering he’d been obsessed with the female for the last eight months he knew every little change in her scents, when her emotions changed. This, well, he didn’t know what to make of it.

“Put us to work,” Rory said to Taylor who gave them a wicked grin.

“So glad you boys volunteered. You can take the hay bales outside.”

He nodded. “Not a problem.”

Liberty came out of the kitchen carrying a bin and frowned when she saw him and Ian lifting bales of hay. She opened her pretty mouth to say something, probably to tell them to stop helping, but Taylor interjected.

“Let them do the grunt work. They deserve it after acting like cubs earlier,” she added.

The female was right, but he wanted to help regardless. Anything for Liberty.

Liberty just shook her head, but he saw her grin when she turned toward the bar to start stacking the cowboy shaped glasses into bins.

He tried and failed not to stare at the way her thin dress hugged the curve of her ass perfectly.
